Egypt secured their place in the knockout stage after grabbing a narrow win over Sudan.

Egypt defeated Sudan with a 1-0 result in their Africa Cup of Nations game on Wednesday. The Pharaohs claimed their second victory of the tournament while earning a last-16 qualification.

An unexpected hero!

Following a slow start to the AFCON, Egypt seem to be finding their feet slowly in the competition. The Pharaohs came into the match on the back of their 1-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Saturday.

Carlos Queiroz’s side dominated the possession in the first half while still remaining cautious of their opponents’ counter-attacks. Following a few half-chances, they finally broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Abdallah El Said’s corner found centre-back Mohamed Abdelmonem, who then smashed the ball into the net with a stunning header.

Similar to their past two games, Egypt struggled to produce enough chances out of their dominance in possession. Sudan made a few decent opportunities to score the equalizer, but they were not clinical in front of the goal.

Egypt finished second behind Group D leaders Nigeria while Sudan settled for a third spot ahead of Guinea-Bissau.
