Sports Innovation previews the EFL Cup match between Chelsea and Southampton and offers team stats and betting tips with the latest odds.

Chelsea welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday for a last-16 clash in the EFL Cup.

As one of the most successful clubs in EFL Cup history, Chelsea are naturally among the favorites for title success. The five-time winners last lifted the famous trophy in 2015. Given their brilliant form under Thomas Tuchel, they have every reason to believe in their chances of a sixth title.

Southampton, on the other hand, have had no luck in the competition. The Saints have never won the EFL Cup nor reached the final itself. They hope to end this barren record, although the odds suggest they’ll be on their way out again on Tuesday.

Facts and figures for Chelsea vs Southampton

Current form — Chelsea v. Southampton

The Blues out to continue excellent form

Chelsea will be out to extend their fine run of results lately. In their last 3 matches, Thomas Tuchel’s side beat Brentford 1-0 in the Premier League before bagging a 4-0 Champions League win over Malmo. They thrashed Norwich City 7-0 in the Premier League at the weekend.

Can the Saints defy the odds?

Southampton go into this encounter on the back of a miserable record in previous outings. In their last 3 Premier League matches, Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side lost 3-1 to Chelsea before beating Leeds 1-0. They drew 2-2 with Burnley last time out.

Chelsea v. Southampton — fixture history

Having never simultaneously played in the EFL Cup this is the first time Chelsea comes up against Southampton in this division.

Based on recent Premier League and FA Cup encounters, though, history is on Chelsea’s side. The Blues have a 6-3-0 record against Southampton and won last time out by a 3-1 scoreline on October 2021. Over 2.5 goals and BTTS has also been a winning bet in 5 of the last 10 meetings between these clubs.

Primary goal getter

Looking at the goalscorer market, it would seem a good idea to side with Ben Chilwell. He is the most consistent scoring player for Chelsea in their last 6 matches. He managed to find the back of the net 3 times, and will surely want to add some more goals against Southampton.

The visitors, though, will have to do without Armando Broja. The on loan forward cannot play against his parent club, Chelsea. Therefore, the likes of James Ward-Prowse and Ibrahima Diallo will need to step up their game in west London.
