German legend Lothar Matthaus believes Borussia Dortmund won’t keep Erling Haaland for long amid interest from ‘big clubs’.
Haaland emerged as one of the most exciting young talents in European football following an outstanding campaign in 2019/20 with RB Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund.
The latter fended off competition from the likes of Manchester United and Juventus to sign him on a €20m deal last January, and quickly got their money’s worth.
The 20-year-old has since become an indispensable part of Lucien Favre’s attack, with 24 goals in just 27 games to his name.
Probably the one downside of Haaland’s impressive exploits at Signal Iduna Park is the interest it has inevitably attracted, as it once did with Robert Lewandowski – who left BVB for Bayern Munich in 2014.
“I am thinking of the big clubs, not necessarily Bayern Munich, because Robert Lewandowski will play for the next two or three years and Haaland probably won’t stay in Dortmund that long,” Matthaus told Sky.
“But there’s Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester or Klopp, who is looking for a successor for Firmino.”
Haaland is currently preparing for Dortmund’s Champions League match away to Club Brugge on Wednesday night in Group F.
