A string of poor performances has brought much criticism Raphael Varane’s way lately, and his national team coach has called for calm.

Real Madrid were found on the wrong end of the 4-1 scoreline in their most recent La Liga outing against Valencia.

While the entire Los Blancos backline individually was at fault for each of the goals conceded, it was Raphael Varane who received the most stick.

He scored an own goal on the night, adding to his underwhelming performances of the last few months.

Back in August, the French center-back made two big errors leading to two goals in the Champions League last 16 second-leg clash against Manchester City that saw his side get knocked out of the competition.

Varane has ever since looked a shadow of himself, but France manager Didier Deschamps is unwilling to listen to any criticism for the 2018 World Cup winner.

“Everyone can have a bad game but play at their best in others,” Deschamps said, via Marca.

“They have to play every three days. His team lost; he’s a defender conceding goals. He can have responsibility for any goal, but I know what Raphael is capable of doing.”
