Sidelined since December after going under the knife, the Brazilian’s return to action has been further delayed after another operation.

Philippe Coutinho underwent a second knee surgery and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2020/21 season.

Coutinho is yet to feature for Barcelona this year, having last featured as a substitute in the 1-1 La Liga draw against Eibar near the turn of the year.

Only 14 times has the 28-year-old took to the pitch in the Catalan colors this term, and has been forced to miss 33 games across all competitions since rupturing his meniscus in December.

There’s no timescale provided for his return but, considering that Barca have only 10 more matches left to play, it is unlikely that the former Liverpool star will feature again this season.

A statement on Barcelona’s official Twitter account read:

“Phil Coutinho had a meniscal cyst in his left knee successfully operated on by Dr Rodrigo Lasmar, under the supervision of the club’s medical services team.

“Coutinho is out and his recovery will determine his availability.”

Coutinho could make it back in time from the treatment table for the Copa America, which is scheduled to start on June 13.
