The Brazilian has been a shadow of the player he once was ever since departing Anfield in January 2018.

Philippe Coutinho should return to the Premier League and join Newcastle United in order to “come back to his best,” according to former Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique.

Coutinho moved to Barcelona in a blockbuster £142million deal after making a name for himself at Liverpool.

It was expected the attacking midfielder would establish himself as an indispensable figure in the Barcelona line-up, but he has not even gone close to delivering up to the expectations so far.

The 29-year-old’s time in Catalonia has been filled with form and fitness problems, although he has started to show a glimpse of his old self this season.

“The problem with Phil has been the injuries in Barcelona,” Enrique told bemybet.com.

“I don’t think he’s been fit enough because I follow him a lot, he’s my friend. Quality-wise, what do I need to say about Phil? That’s why Barcelona paid so much money for him.

“It’s true he hasn’t had the best last few years and maybe coming back to the Premier League, somewhere like Newcastle.

“The fans would back him straight away and sing his name, it would lift him up again and he’d come back to his best, it would be the right move for him.

“I know how much he’s earning in Barcelona and I’m not sure if Newcastle can pay that! Obviously, they can because the new owners have the money, but it would be too much of a difference to other players in the squad.”
