Inter Milan deserved the victory against Shakhtar as they were the far superior team on the pitch, suggests Antonio Conte.

Inter Milan stream-rolled their way into the Europa League final with a resounding win of Shakhtar Donetsk at Esprit Arena on Monday.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice, so did Lautaro Martinez, and Danilo D’Ambrosio also got on the scoresheet to contribute in the 5-0 thrashing.

It was the biggest winning margin in a single semi-final match ever in European competition since AC Milan beat Real Madrid in the 1988-89 European Cup by the same scoreline.

Inter also forced Shakhtar to incur their worst loss in Europe since the 6-0 defeat to Manchester City in the 2018 Champions League.

Speaking after the match, Antonio Conte, who will be overseeing his first European final as a head coach, was more than happy with his team’s performance.

“I think we reached the Final playing against a team that we made look less strong than it was, but Shakhtar have a lot of talent and we stopped them playing with the pressing all over the pitch,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia.

“We played with courage, had the right plan, played a very European game in the right way and the players deserve all the credit.

“It was a super performance and we made Shakhtar look average.”
