The Blues have fallen much behind in the title race despite significant investments in their squad, which led to the manager losing his job.

Frank Lampard deserved more time as the Chelsea head coach, argues Harry Redknapp while branding his sacking decision as a “knee-jerk reaction” from the club.

On Monday, Chelsea announced that they have decided to relieve Lampard of his managerial duties.

The Blues have taken five defeats in their last eight Premier League fixtures to sit down at ninth in the standings, five points below the top-four and 15 adrift of the top of the table.

Their form is unconvincing as it is, and it becomes even more unacceptable considering the fact they spent over €200 million in the summer to bolster their squad.

While the team were far from performing at the desired level with their former midfielder at the helm, the sack decision came as a surprise after he had guided the London side to the FA Cup fifth round.

Redknapp feels it is ‘unfortunate’ that his nephew was not allowed enough time to turn the results around at the club.

“It’s very disappointing to hear the news this morning,” the ex-West Ham and Tottenham manager told talkSPORT. “On the back of a good result, beating Luton in the FA Cup, I thought they’d give him a bit of time.

“People need time. Losing four or five games doesn’t suddenly make you a bad manager! Surely you’ve got to have more faith in people rather than giving them that knee-jerk reaction.

“The recruitment for me in the summer, all the money they spent, I don’t think they spent it well. I’ve not been impressed with the players they’ve brought in apart from Thiago Silva who they brought in on a free transfer, the rest of them there are big question marks over.

“I doubt very much whether Frank had a big say in over who came in.

“If they were worried about his lack of experience, maybe they should have brought someone in with a bit more experience around him. You need people around you when things are not going well, and he didn’t have that.

“You need time, and unfortunately at Chelsea, it’s a club where they don’t seem to give you time.”
