The Blues midfielder released a ‘celebration’ photo just moments after reports of Lampard’s dismissal broke out.

Danny Drinkwater has apologized for posting a celebration picture of himself on social media just moments after Frank Lampard’s sacking.

The Chelsea manager was fired on Monday within less than 24 hours of the 3-1 FA Cup win over Luton Town. His exit came amid a woeful run of form in the Premier League, leaving the club down in ninth place in the standings.

As news first broke out of Lampard’s fate, however, Drinkwater stirred controversy by sharing a picture of himself celebrating as a Leicester player on Instagram.

The 30-year-old midfielder, who never once made Lampard’s squad in any competition, later replaced the post with an apology message.

“Thought that was a bit of a strange reaction…”, Drinkwater later wrote. “Didn’t hear about the news before I posted that.

“I was just missing playing.

“The manager was somebody I looked up to hugely as a player.”

Drinkwater recently completed a loan move to Turkish side Kasimpasa for the rest of the 2020/21 campaign.
