The England international has started the new season with another fitness issue.

Mauricio Pochettino has offered a transfer update on Reece James ahead of Chelsea’s upcoming derby against West Ham.

James started for the Blues in their 1-1 draw against Liverpool last weekend. However, he limped off in the 76th minute as he picked up a hamstring injury.

The Chelsea captain’s injury record had fans worrying that he might be up for another lengthy spell on the sidelines. But Pochettino says the fitness issue is not serious.

“Yes, it’s a hamstring. It’s not a few days, it’s maybe a few weeks,” the Argentine manager told reporters.

“The good thing is that it’s not a big issue. When he plays again, we hope he’s stronger than he was before. We will assess him day-by-day and make a plan every day.”

Who will replace James in Chelsea’s lineup?

Malo Gusto is in line to cover for James’ absence at the right-back position.

The 20-year-old is back in Stamford Bridge after spending a short loan spell at Lyon last season. He had a solid display after replacing James in the draw against Liverpool.

Another option is Axel Disasi, who scored in his Chelsea debut last weekend. Disasi is primarily a centre-back, but his versatility allows him to also play on the flanks.
