Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of new signing Edouard Mendy after the goalkeeper pulled out of international duty with Senegal.

New Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has sustained a thigh injury on international duty with Senegal.

The 28-year-old completed a switch to Stamford Bridge from Rennes last month and claimed a clean sheet on his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace last Saturday.

Mendy has returned to London and will be assessed by Chelsea to know the extent of his injury.

“The Senegalese Football Federation has announced the withdrawal from their squad of Edouard Mendy due to injury.” Chelsea said in a statement on their website.

“The goalkeeper sustained an injury to his right thigh during training on Wednesday and had a medical examination in a hospital in Rabat, where Senegal are due to play Morocco tonight.”

“Mendy has since returned to Chelsea where he will undergo further examinations.”

It leaves Lampard with a selection headache if the new signing is ruled out for a while.

Chelsea host Southampton at Stamford Bridge after the international break on October 17. Except the injury to Mendy is not serious, Lampard will have to decide between starting Kepa and Caballero.

The Spanish goalkeeper recently made comments that appeared to take a swipe at the Blues boss after his clean sheet for his national side.

Chelsea will now anxiously wait for the test results with the hopes that Mendy will be fit to play regardless.
