Liverpool edged out the Blues in an extensive penalty shootout to win the EFL Cup.
Liverpool defeated Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday. After 120 minutes of missed opportunities and intense drama, the Reds won the title for the first time since 2012.
Liverpool claim the Carabao Cup!
The way both teams started the game promised a game full of goals. It certainly did not lack drama, with the two sides missing three outstanding chances in the first period.
However, they had to bring the tense awaiting of the first goal with them into the second half. Liverpool continued dominating the possession, but Chelsea were not short of great goalscoring opportunities.
Mason Mount missed Chelsea’s best chance to break the deadlock, leaving his boss Thomas Tuchel bashing the ground in frustration.
Liverpool then scored through Joel Matip in the 67th minute, but VAR disallowed the goal for a foul in the buildup. Another disallowed goal came only ten minutes later, this time for Chelsea.
Both sides pushed to get the match-winner in the final ten minutes, but the game ended in a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes. During the extra time, both sides played more conservatively, which left penalty shootouts as the only way to choose the winners of the close race.
However, the penalties turned out to be as nail-biting as the rest of the game. Both sides scored their first ten penalties before Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga blasted his shot wide off the target. The miss was enough to win the Reds their first trophy since their historic league title in 2020.
What’s next for Liverpool and Chelsea?
Both sides will now have to shift their focus toward their upcoming games in the FA Cup. The Reds will host Norwich City on Wednesday while Chelsea meet Luton Town on the same day.
