Ahead of another chance to make history, a Champions League legend fears Ronaldo could break his all-time record in the tournament.
The UEFA Champions League is arguably one of the most difficult trophies to win, but it is also Ronaldo’s favorite competition. Up until now, he’s been able to win one with Manchester United and four with Real Madrid. As of right now, he is only one from Paco Gento’s all-time record of six European Cups.
But there’s another man who has an accomplishment no other player holds, that man is Clarence Seedorf. Throughout his illustrious career, the Dutch former midfielder won the competition four times during his time. That is one less than Cristiano. However, Seedorf did what no other player has done before or after him.
The former star lifted the trophy with three different clubs throughout his entire career. When he started playing for AFC Ajax, he won the title in 1995. He then won it with Real Madrid in 1998. And finally, Seedorf won it twice as a player for AC Milan. These titles came in 2003 and 2007.
Can Ronaldo beat Seedorf’s record?
As a new season begins for Cristiano Ronaldo in Juventus, the challenge is set to beat Seedorf’s record. The Portuguese forward may not have a competitive-enough squad to accomplish such a feat. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t going to try.
“It’ll be a very nice pleasure to have Cristiano Ronaldo equalling my record. We could’ve talked about somebody different, right? So, I don’t think it’s a bad thing,” he told Goal.
“I will always be the first and that won’t change, and records are there to be equaled and to be broken, and Juventus can definitely always be competitors for the Champions League. As I said before, Cristiano is maintaining his motivation and his performances, so yeah. Why not?”
