Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga was called up to Les Bleus duty by Didier Deschamps for their fixtures against Sweden and Croatia.

France are preparing to improve on their Nations League showings. With the coronavirus pandemic taking its toll, Didier Deschamps has taken a novel approach.

The 2018 World Cup winning coach is looking at youth to add vigor to his squad. Deschamps has called up Eduardo Camavinga to the national team. He is 17 years, nine months and 17 days old.

Camavinga was pleased with the call-up. He hailed Paul Pogba as a source of motivation and wants to play with the midfielder.

Although the Manchester United man is unavailable due to Covid-19, Camavinga is eyeing a long term role with Les Bleus to play alongside his idol.

If he comes on against Sweden or Croatia, Camavinga will become the youngest France international since the Second World War. The teenager is not looking at such statistics but wants to fulfil his childhood dreams.

“Representing your country is something great and playing would fulfil a childhood dream of mine, although I’m still a kid,” Marca quoted Camavinga.

“Being the youngest player isn’t what’s most important. The main thing is staying [in the senior squad] for as long as possible.”

The Angola born midfielder became a French citizen last year. He made his debut for Rennes in Ligue 1 at the age of 16 years and is already being targeted by Real Madrid.
