Fulham was set to play Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this afternoon but was unable to due to a coronavirus outbreak in their squad.

Here we go again, and not in a good way. The clash between Tottenham and Fulham just became the third Premier League match to be postponed because of Covid-19 this season.

The fixture was set to take place today in London. However, Fulham requested the league to postpone the match this afternoon. There has been a significant rise in infections within the squad and staff. Therefore, the Premier League Board decided to accept the request and postpone the clash just three hours before its start.

“The Premier League Board has consulted its medical advisors and the decision to postpone the game has been taken as a precaution and with the health of players and staff as the priority. The group will now be retested immediately.”

Two days ago, the fixture between Everton and Manchester City suffered the same ending. Moreover, the Premier League announced this Tuesday a record-breaking number of 18 positive Covid-19 cases. Consequently, there have been pleas for football to take a break in England. One of them came yesterday from West Brom manager Sam Allardyce.

“When I listen to the news that the variant virus transmits quicker than the original virus, we can only do the right thing, which is have a circuit break,” he stated after the 5-0 loss against Leeds. “I am 66 years old and the last thing I want to do is catch Covid.”

However, the Premier League officials have claimed that the league’s first priority is the players’ and staff’s health. They believe the conditions are still gathered for teams to compete as planned.

“With low numbers of positive tests across the overwhelming majority of clubs, the Premier League continues to have full confidence in its COVID-19 protocols and being able to continue to play our fixtures as scheduled.”

Jose Mourinho wasn’t pleased with the wait.

Before the announcement, Jose Mourinho posted a somewhat sarcastic video showing how he was waiting for the official decision. Moreover, the manager took a gentle strike at the league in the caption.
