Even though this was Kylian Mbappe’s night, we need to talk about Leo Messi’s PSG debut against Reims on Sunday evening.
Leo Messi’s PSG debut against Reims was a massive event that moved tens of thousands of people in the small French city. Ahead of the scheduled Ligue 1 match between both sides, Reims’ president spoke about the numbers of ticket sales at the stadium. According to his information, this was the first time people from all over the world paid tickets for a match against PSG. It was clear that the Messi phenomenon was in full effect weeks before the match.
When Messi appeared on the call-up list, the excitement was palpable all around the country. As the match approached, all the fans were more than ready to welcome one of the best players in football history. Even Reims’ supporters were extremely excited for the imminent debut where Mbappe and Neymar started with Leo watching from the bench. As he goes through the middle of his transfer saga, Mbappe scored a brace while Leo was still waiting for his big moment. However, the excitement was too great to handle.
How did Messi fare against Reims?
After Kylian Mbappe’s two goals, Mauricio Pochettino decided to get Messi on the pitch as Neymar’s replacement. As soon as he started warming up, the entire Reims Stadium went bananas for the star. By the time he got on the pitch alongside Ander Herrera, the cheers could be heard miles away from the stadium. The performance itself wasn’t too spectacular from Messi but it sure was strange watching him with a different kit.
He seemed more nervous than loose on the pitch but he finally made it happen. From this moment forward, we will likely see Messi playing more regularly with his new club. The dream of watching all three major stars playing together stays alive for now. Unless Mbappe leaves tomorrow, we will get to watch them play together after the international break.
