After a meeting between the Catalonia Government and interim president Carles Tusquets, Barcelona reached a decision about the elections.
FC Barcelona was supposed to have an election process on January 24 that would determine who will be the next club president. The strongest contender to win the election is Joan Laporta, but he is not generally liked by the other club associates. When Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned from his position, Carles Tusquets took control as the interim president and promised he would call for elections quickly. That was in November and there is still no official date for the elections after what happened today.
With the global pandemic as the perfect excuse, Tusquets had a meeting with the Catalan Government to determine that the elections on January 24 were impossible to make. However, there are plenty of other activities that are more dangerous and the Catalan Government allows them to happen on a daily basis. As a resolution, the date will be determined for either the end of February or the beginning of March.
FC Barcelona’s official statement on the elections.
The club decided to publish a statement on their official website, this is part of it: “This Friday, January 15, the Catalan Government and FC Barcelona have held a virtual working meeting to address the holding of the elections for President and Board of Directors of the sports entity in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“In the course of the meeting, the Government has conveyed to the club that the current epidemiological situation does not make it possible to authorize the movement outside the municipality to members who do not have a polling station in their municipality on January 24. Given the high mobility this would entail. For its part, the club has stated the impossibility of holding elections on the scheduled date due to mobility restrictions decreed by the Catalan Government in the current context of pandemic, which is why the date of the elections must be delayed.”
