Today was the last day for candidates to gather FC Barcelona’s signatures for the upcoming elections. We have four official candidates.
FC Barcelona was finally able to get all candidates who will have an election race for the club’s presidency. On Monday, we finally got an idea of how this race will look like with no major surprises. The final candidates to run for club president will be four in total. Joan Laporta leads the way. We also have Victor Font, Toni Freixa, and Emili Rusaud.
There were another four candidates who weren’t able to gather more than 2,000 signatures. Rules to present yourself as a Barcelona candidate for the presidency are to gather this number of signatures from associates. Only the four mentioned pre-candidates were able to accomplish this part of the protocol. But there was one clear leader in the race for the hot seat.
Laporta is the overwhelming favorite.
Today was the day for Joan Laporta to present his signatures as he arrived triumphantly at Camp Nou to make the announcement. Just to put things in perspective, Josep Maria Bartomeu broke the record of most signatures in the 2015 elections. He presented 8,554 after the Blaugrana won the treble in 2015 and beat Laporta by nearly 3,000 signatures.
Today, the former president presented a record of 10,257 signatures. But the most important support he got from these signatures is Lionel Messi’s family, who blindly support Laporta. Even though Victor Font will also be a strong candidate, there’s little he can do against Laporta’s popularity amongst Barcelona supporters.
