The Portugal captain scored two goals to help the team get a first Nations League win of the 2022/23 campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the world’s best player and his performance against Switzerland was ‘nothing out of the ordinary, according to Portugal manager Fernando Santos.

Ronaldo pulled off another attacking masterclass on Sunday to steer the national team to a first win in the 2022/23 Nations League and leapfrog the Czech Republic – who drew 2-2 with Spain on the same day – to first place in Group A2.

The frontman scored twice to help Portugal defeat Switzerland 4-0 in Lisbon. Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho and Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo were the other two players on target.

Speaking to reporters at a post-match press conference, Santos hailed Ronaldo as the ‘ultimate example’ after a routine match-winning display.

“The captain is the best in the world,” the Portugal manager said on Mais Futebol.

“He arrives. When you say he’s the best in the world… how many more words are needed? I’ve said this I don’t know how many times.

“These exhibits are nothing out of the ordinary. Support from fans? He’s captain of the team, he’s the ultimate example.”

Ronaldo has now scored a world record 117 international goals in 187 games.

The Manchester United ace hopes to add to his tally again on Thursday when Portugal take on the Czech Republic in Lisbon.
