A former Real Madrid player has talked up the qualities of the French forward while comparing him to a club icon.
Karim Benzema “close to being like” Raul Gonzalez, says Christian Karembeu as he showers praise on the Real Madrid striker.
Raul spent 16 successful seasons with Real Madrid between 1994 and 2010, setting numerous records, collecting numerous accolades, and winning a host of trophies.
One of the most decorated Los Blancos player ever, he illustrious CV includes five La Liga titles, four Champions League trophies, a record five La Liga’s Best Spanish Player, three UEFA Club Forward of the Year, two Pichichi Trophy among a plethora of other honors.
With 323 goals to his name, the Spaniard is only second to Cristiano Ronaldo in the club’s all-time top-scorers list.
Benzema needs just two more goals to overtake Raul, who has 70 goals to his name, as the club’s second-highest scorer in the Champions League.
“He is a very complete player, who can play on the right or the left,” Karembeu said of Benzema on Radio MARCA.
“He has shown his talent by scoring goals and he is close to being like Raul, although he would need to do more seasons.
“I think he’s doing very well at Real Madrid. He needs to stay focused because he can increase his Champions League scoring records.
“We have many successful players who have come out of France and he is one of them, feeling supported by a coach like Zinedine Zidane as he gives him confidence.”
