During the press conference ahead of Benfica’s Europa League match, the gaffer attempted to justify last Tuesday’s incident of racism.
Getting behind an already controversial figure like Benfica’s manager is difficult when you look at his track record with scandals. Just last week, Jorge Jesus was involved in some controversy when he snapped back at a female journalist. During a press conference, he told her that he didn’t expect a woman to “understand good football”.
Whatever that means. Today, the Benfica boss wanted to give his two cents on the matter that took place last Tuesday at Parc des Princes. Pierre Webo demanded an explanation when the fourth referee referred to him as the “negro player”. As a result of this whole incident, the match had to be postponed until UEFA changed the referee.
In fact, the federation decided to completely change all the refs from that game. But Jorge Jesus seemed like he wanted to say his piece on the matter and he doesn’t seem to learn his lesson.
Jorge Jesus’ controversial statements.
Ahead of Benfica’s Europa League match, Jorge Jesus spoke through the Daily Mail: “Today, racism is very fashionable,” said Jesus. “As a citizen, I have the right to think my way. I can only have a concrete opinion knowing what was said [between officials during the PSG v Istanbul Basaksehir game], because today anything that one can say against a black person is always a sign of racism.
“If the same thing is said against a white person, it is no longer a sign of racism. This wave is spreading in the world, and maybe there was even a sign of racism, but I don’t know what they said.”
There is still no confirmation to see whether Jorge Jesus will receive any type of punishment for his words. However, it’s safe to say he made a mistake by siding with the perpetrator.
