The Bavarians have reinforced their defense this winter by signing two new full-backs and a goalkeeper.

Joao Cancelo has become Bayern Munich’s third signing of 2023.

The 28-year-old full-back has joined the Bundesliga leaders on a six-month loan from Manchester City. Bayern have a buy option included for the end of the season, worth a reported €70 million.

“FC Bayern is a great club, one of the best in the world,” Cancelo told the club’s media.

“It is an enormous motivation for me to play alongside these extraordinary players. I know that this club, this team lives for titles and wins titles every year. I’m also driven by the hunger for success. I‘ll give my best for FC Bayern.”

Cancelo is the third new defensive recruit to arrive at the Allianz Arena this month after Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer and Ajax left-back Daley Blind.

The Portugal international leaves City after losing favor under Pep Guardiola since the World Cup. He has only started three games, thanks to Nathan Ake’s improved form and the emergence of 18-year-old Rico Lewis.

Cancelo managed nine goals and 22 assists in 154 appearances for City following his €65 million arrival from Juventus in 2019. He helped the club win two Premier League titles and the EFL Cup. His performances have earned him a spot in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the last two seasons.
