It happened during the UEFA Nations League semifinal, a Barcelona youngster just made history with Spain against the Italy squad.

With 17 years and 62 days young, Pablo Martin Paez Gaviria just made history with the Spain National Team as another Barcelona precocious youngster. In the game buildup before facing Italy, manager Luis Enrique confronted the press and defended this player. An overwhelming majority of the Spanish media wasn’t happy about the manager’s decision to call the young Barcelona player after only four official matches played.

But Luis Enrique has been following Gavi’s career since he coached FC Barcelona. He was simply waiting for the kid to make his professional debut in order to give him a proper call. Destiny decided that his debut needed to be against Italy at one of the biggest possible stages. If Spain won this evening, they would qualify for the UEFA Nations League final. At first, there was a general feeling that Gavi would start the game from the bench. But Luis Enrique had other plans that left everybody’s jaws on the floor.

Gavi makes history with Spain.

An hour before kick-off, we all realized that Luis Enrique was as serious about Gavi as he was with Pedri. He decided to make him the youngest footballer to play an official match with Spain in history. Moreover, Gavi didn’t even feel the pressure as he became a key element in his side performance. An omnipresent player who is always reliable, Gavi presented himself to the world of football with a stellar debut.

If there were any doubts about him before this match, they are non-existent now. The Sevilla-born midfielder wore the number ‘9’ jersey tonight but he could’ve easily worn the number ‘10’ without a problem. Gavi is here to stay and he proved that he has a bright future ahead of him. It’s Ronald Koeman’s turn to make him a regular at FC Barcelona, especially after tonight’s performance.
