The veteran midfielder is spending the final months of his current contract at Barcelona.
Barcelona will try to keep Sergio Busquets beyond his current contract, according to manager Xavi Hernandez.
The experienced midfielder will become a free agent at the end of the season, with no signs of a contract extension being imminent.
Busquets retired from international football when Spain lost against Morocco in the World Cup round of 16 earlier this month.
Rumours have emerged of the 34-year-old’s decision to leave Barca and join an MLS side in the summer. But Xavi hopes the Catalans could persuade him to stay beyond his current deal.
“We haven’t talked about this,” he said. “There are six months of matches left, so we will see how it goes. We are focused on what happens this year.
“We cannot make plans for the following season, but we are waiting for him. It is his decision.
“He has a contract until June and then we will see. It’s more a personal feeling of his. How he sees himself in the team, for me, he is fundamental. It will depend on him, more than on the club and me, but we will try to convince him.”
Barcelona will return to action when they face Espanyol in their next La Liga game on Saturday.
