Morocco reached the next round of the World Cup with an impressive display against La Roja.

Morocco defeated Spain 3-0 in the penalties after holding them down to a goalless draw. The Atlas Lions continue their dream run in the World Cup as Spain suffer unexpected elimination.

Bouno to rescue!

Similar to their defeat against Japan, Spain dominated the possession early on. But their passes rarely reached inside Morocco’s box during the first period.

La Roja restarted their efforts to break the deadlock after half-time. But Morocco held on to their defensive integrity while looking for quick counter-attacks.

During the first half of the extra time, the Atlas Lions had a massive chance to finish off the game. But Simon’s leg save kept Spain in the tournament.

Luis Enrique subbed in Pablo Sarabia only two minutes before the 120-minute mark. The Paris Saint-Germain star nearly secured a late winner for La Roja, but his powerful shot met the far post.

Sarabia hit the post again when he took Spain’s first penalty. Yassine Bounou then saved two spot-kicks from Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets to put his side on the verge of winning the game.

Achraf Hakimi completed Morocco’s stunning victory by converting their third penalty with a cool shot to the centre of the net.

Morocco will now prepare to meet the winners of Portugal’s clash against Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
