Barcelona just issued a statement regarding the medical condition of one of their star players.

Philippe Coutinho went through a successful surgery this Saturday morning after sustaining a knee injury. Doctor Joan Carles Monllau performed the operation on the Brazilian to repair the meniscus of his left knee.

“Philippe Coutinho has undergone a successful operation on the external meniscus of his left knee this Saturday morning of January 2, but the verdict is that he will be out of action for approximately three months,” read the club’s statement.

The Brazilian was brought on around the 66th minute-mark against Eibar in Barca’s last fixture of 2020. However, Coutinho limped off during injury-time and was unable to finish the match. In fact, the midfielder had recently returned to the squad after being sidelined due to a hamstring injury.

Although the news comes as a huge blow for the Blaugrana, there may be a financial silver-lining. Barcelona is due to pay Liverpool another €20 million due to a clause on Coutinho’s transfer deal. The Spanish side will take a big financial hit if the Brazilian plays 10 more matches for the club. For now, the pay-day will be delayed as the 28-year-old will not return before April.
