Barcelona have issued another update on Philippe Coutinho and it appears the midfielder will need surgery after his recent injury.

Coutinho will undergo a knee surgery by the weekend after doing damage to his ‘lateral meniscus’, as revealed by Barcelona.

The Brazilian was introduced as a 66th-minute substitute during Tuesday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Eibar at Camp Nou. However, he was unable to play until the end after sustaining the injury in second-half stoppage time.

Barcelona already confirmed Coutinho will undergo surgery and have now released further details on that.

A statement on the club’s website read: “Philippe Coutinho will be operated on this Saturday to treat the injury to the lateral meniscus of his left knee.

“The procedure will be performed by doctor Joan Carles Monllau, under the supervision of the FC Barcelona medical services.”

“Once the surgery has been completed, further information will be provided to detail the approximate expected recovery time.”

A definite time-frame on how long Coutinho will be ruled out for will be known after his surgery. However, reports via Spanish media are already claiming the 28-year-old could be out for four months and effectively miss almost the rest of the season.

Coutinho now becomes the second Barcelona player this season who will undergo surgery after Ansu Fati.

He is the third player to pick up a knee injury this season after Fati and Pique.

Coutinho has already missed one month of action due to injury and this would come as a further blow for the player and Barcelona.
