The Man City boss breaks silence on the Spaniard’s imminent move to Barcelona.
Barcelona are close to finalizing a move for Ferran Torres. On Wednesday, several sources reported the Spanish side have agreed to a £46.7million deal for the Manchester City forward.
Since joining the Citizens from Valencia, Torres has failed to force himself into Pep Guardiola’s plans. The Man City boss mainly used him as a backup for his side’s usual starters on the wings. However, Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez might use him as more of a striker due to his side’s limited resources upfront.
In a press conference ahead of Man City’s game against Leicester City, Guardiola spoke about Torres’ transfer.
He said (via The Independent): “I know they are negotiating and I think it is close. When the club announces it it will be done.
“I want the happiness of my players. If we had just two or three attacking players then maybe Ferran would think he had more chance to play and stay longer.
“But always I have the feeling that when Barcelona or Real Madrid knock on the door of players then it is difficult to say no.
“They are still the strongest teams in the world in terms of fashion, cities and many reasons. He is from Spain, Barcelona knock and I understand why he wants to leave.
“I cannot convince the players to do something when their mind isn’t here. It makes no sense. Other clubs make them stay, I don’t agree with that.”
When asked whether the Citizens will sign a replacement this January, Guardiola responded: “No, we’re not going to bring in any striker in January.”
Following their game against Leicester City, Man City will face Brentford three days later.
