The 21-year-old’s future has been in doubt following a lack of opportunities under Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman.
Barcelona have extended midfielder Riqui Puig’s contract until 2023, according to reports from Spain.
The decision on Puig was made despite the youngster’s struggles. He has just four minutes of La Liga football to his name this season, with Ronald Koeman having frozen him out of the squad. The Dutchman even questioned his commitment in training recently amid rumors the player ‘leaked’ information to the press.
Puig’s circumstances naturally raised doubts over his future. Several clubs reportedly enquired for his services, including La Liga side Real Betis. But while Koeman advised him on a loan move for more opportunities, the Catalan is determined to stay and prove his worth to the Blaugrana manager.
Mundo Deportivo state Barcelona have since activated a clause in his contract to extend it until 2023. It’s already signed, and the only thing left is an official announcement.
Carles Alena, meanwhile, is set to complete a loan move to Getafe. The midfielder, who celebrates his 23rd birthday today, will stay with the Madrid-based club until the end of the season.
