The reigning LaLiga champions have suffered an unwelcome setback ahead of their trip to Villarreal.

FC Barcelona midfielder Pedri faces a spell on the sidelines after his latest injury setback.

On Thursday, Pedri suffered a thigh injury during a training session. Barcelona broke the news later that day in a brief statement. The club ruled Pedri out for Sunday’s trip to Villarreal in LaLiga, but did not state when the midfielder may return to action.

How many Barcelona games could Pedri miss?

According to Mundo Deportivo, Pedri might not return until mid-October. That means he’ll certainly be out of action for the rest of August, and potentially all of September.

Not only will Pedri miss Barcelona’s next two games against Villarreal and Osasuna, but he also won’t represent Spain during the upcoming international break.

If Pedri does stay sidelined until mid-October, he’ll miss at least six LaLiga games and three or four group stage Champions League matches for Barcelona

This is just the latest in a round of injury setbacks for Pedri, who played a whopping 52 games in his debut season with Barcelona in 2020/21. Last season, he missed a total of 41 games for club and country, mainly due to a hamstring problem.

The former Las Palmas star had started both of Barca’s games this season. He even scored the opening goal in last Sunday’s 2-0 win over Cadiz.

Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo is also out with a hamstring injury. He isn’t expected to be back until after next month’s international break.
