The Argentine superstar might make his sensational return to Camp Nou as soon as the next season.
Barcelona could afford to re-sign Lionel Messi back next summer, according to the club’s economic vice president Eduard Romeu.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner ended his 21-year stay at Barca in August 2021. Following a slow start at Paris Saint-Germain, Messi has regained his best form this season.
However, the Argentine’s time at the club might end as soon as the next summer. PSG’s two-year deal with Messi expires at the end of the season, with the Argentine reportedly deciding his future after the World Cup.
“As it would be on a free, surely it is something that we can do. But it’d be a technical decision, anyways,” Romeu told Mundo Deportivo.
He added: “There is margin but we have made a very important effort this summer and if any complement was needed, we would have to study it.”
Despite their well-documented financial issues, Barcelona managed to sign and register seven players during this summer’s transfer window.
The club’s investment on free-agent players saw Frank Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Hector Bellerin, and Marcos Alonso join the Catalans on free moves.
A possible move for Messi, however, will be much more complicated due to his personal demands. Let’s see how far Joan Laporta would go to pay his ‘moral debt’ to the Argentine icon.
