The DFL Super Cup took place at Signal Iduna Park between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich today. We had the most important German clubs facing each other for the first trophy of the season. Right before kick-off, there was a beautiful tribute from both squads dedicated to the late great Gerd Muller. Thomas Muller held his number ‘9’ jersey as the entire stadium honored him with a minute of silence. After this beautiful moment that was accompanied by a video tribute, both sides started the match.
The massive level difference is still too great to ignore from both teams. Bayern Munich seems infinitely superior to a competitive Borussia Dortmund that simply faced one of the best football clubs in the world. Keep in mind that the Bavarian giants are fresh out of winning the treble during the first year of the pandemic. After a brilliant double intervention from Manuel Neuer, Robert Lewandowski scored the opening goal with a potent header. Der Klassiker started off with Bayern taking the lead in Dortmund with a far superior showing.

Despite both sides starting off with the right foot in the Bundesliga, we still needed to watch them play each other. Erling Haaland was completely stopped by Bayern Munich’s defense led by newbie Upamecano. Niklas Sule was also on point with his coverage of both Haaland and youngster Moukoko. Thomas Muller got to round his tribute to Gerd Muller with Bayern’s second goal of the evening but Dortmund responded to this in a brilliant manner.
After missing a clear chance during the first half in front of Manuel Neuer, Marco Reus scored a worldie from outside the box. Dortmund felt they had a chance to tie the game right after this, but a defensive mistake ended their hopes. Robert Lewandowski scored his second goal after this concentration error and gave Bayern the title at Signal Iduna Park. The level difference between these two sides is still too great for this season. Dortmund will have to do a lot more in order to catch up to the Bavarian giants.
