Sports Innovation previews the DFL Super Cup between Dortmund and Bayern Munich and offers team news, key stats and form guides.

After beginning their respective Bundesliga campaigns last weekend, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich now meet for another Klassiker in the annual DFL Super Cup battle.

Dortmund welcome their old rivals to Signal Iduna Park off the back of a goal-laden start to the season. Marco Rose’s men have scored eight goals in just two games in the DFB-Pokal and Bundesliga. To nobody’s surprise, Erling Haaland was right in the heart of the action. The Norwegian has scored five times already and even chipped in two assists last weekend.

Julian Nagelsmann, on the other hand, hasn’t enjoyed such a smooth start. The new Bayern Munich manager had a difficult pre-season and failed to win on his Bundesliga debut for the club. That favorite tag Bayern are so accustomed to isn’t shining so brightly, but you can never quite rule them out either.

Stats and analysis

Borussia Dortmund have a better record from their last 10 matches across all competitions (friendlies included) than their opponents. The Black and Yellows have averaged 3.1 goals per game, with a total of 31 goals scored. They’ve also conceded just nine goals for an average of 0.9 per game and kept four clean sheets.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, arrive off the back of a mixed record from their last 10 matches across all competitions (friendlies included). The Bavarians averaged an adequate 2.1 goals per game, with a total of 21 goals scored. But they allowed 17 goals against them for an average of 1.7 per game. Rather amazingly, they only kept their opponents from scoring in two of the matches.

Form Guides

Their upcoming match presents yet another opportunity for Dortmund to continue their excellent form. In their 3 final Bundesliga outings, BVB achieved a 3-1 win against Mainz and went on to defeat Bayer Leverkusen 3-1. Their latest game produced a 5-2 win against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Results have been close to hopeless for Bayern Munich in recent months and a quick turnaround is sorely needed. In their last 3 Bundesliga outings, the Bavarians achieved a 2-2 draw against Freiburg and went on to a 5-2 win against Augsburg. Their latest game produced a 1-1 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich Fixture History (Bundesliga)

On 6 March 2021, these two clubs went toe-to-toe against each other in their most previous meeting and Bayern emerged with a 4-2 victory.

The Bavarians have also won three of the last four DFB Super Cup meetings with Dortmund between 2016 and 2020.

Primary goalgetter

Robert Lewandowski broke the recently deceased Gerd Muller’s legendary goal record in the Bundesliga last season. The Pole was on target again to salvage a point against Gladbach. Haaland, meanwhile, has been in sensational form even without Jadon Sancho, who has joined Manchester United. The 20-year-old will be Dortmund’s biggest threat as he seeks to wreak havoc on Bayern.
