Atletico Madrid have confirmed that two of their players have placed themselves in quarantine after returning positive COVID-19 diagnosis.

Atletico Madrid are set to start preparations for the 2019/20 season with September 4 the date to kick off the preseason training.

All of the players in the Atleti squad were made to undertake tests for coronavirus at the club’s training facility, Wanda de Majadahonda Sports City.

Neither of Diego Costa and Santiago Arias, however, were present with the team for the COVID-19 screening.

It was only recently revealed that both the players had picked up the virus earlier and are currently following the safety protocols by placing themselves in quarantine.

A statement released on the club’s official website on Thursday read: “Today every member of the first team passed the preliminary tests that the protocol demands for the start of the 2020-21 season in the Ciudad Deportiva Wanda in Majadahonda.

“The first-team squad was present, except for those internationals currently with their respective national teams and who will be joining the group practices when those commitments come to a close.

“The players Diego Costa and Santiago Arias, who returned their own positive PCR tests during their holidays away from Madrid, were also absent.”

The report also mentioned that the forward as well as the defender are asymptomatic, meaning they are showing no symptoms of carrying the virus.

The number of high-profile coronavirus cases has increased in the last few weeks with Paris Saint Germain’s Neymar, Manchester United’s Paul Pogba, Tottenham’s Tanguy Ndombele, Wolves’ Adama Traore, and Olympique Lyon’s Houssem Aouar all getting infected.
