Another Premier League star joins the list of those to have tested positive for covid-19 on international duty. Mohamed Elneny is the latest.
Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has tested positive for coronavirus, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has announced.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Monday that the player had returned a positive Covid-19 result ahead of their African Cup of Nations tie against Togo on Tuesday.
The EFA also confirmed that Elneny, who is asymptomatic, will now return to Cairo.
The test result follows Egypt team-mate and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah testing positive for the virus last week.
The midfielder’s agent, Alan Nazmy, wrote on Twitter on Monday evening: “Elneny Positive Cov19 get well soon”.
Elneny has been in excellent form for Arsenal this season and his absence would come as a significant blow to Mikel Arteta after the international break.
The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Besiktas and it had seemed as though his time at the Gunners was drawing to an end, but he has resurrected his career in north London under Arteta.
