Defender Angelo Ogbonna will not be able to get any playtime with West Ham for the rest of the season due to a major injury.

Angelo Ogbonna might miss out on the entire season for West Ham as confirmed by the head coach David Moyes.

The 33-year-old was substituted just after 22 minutes in the game which the Hammers won by 3-2 against Liverpool before the international break. After a medical checkup two days later, it was revealed that the defender sustained damage to his right knee.

In the forthcoming days, the Italian centre-back will undergo surgery to fix his anterior cruciate ligament injury. However, the bad news is that he will have to go through a long route of recovery after the issue is resolved.

Ahead of West Ham’s Premier League clash against Wolves, Moyes spoke about Ogbonna’s problem. He said: “He is going to have surgery.”

“We think surgery will take place over the next couple of days. And that’s really sad because he’s done a great job for us.

“He’s a great boy and a great team player. He’s someone we love having around, and more importantly, his performances have been excellent for us. It’s a real sad moment for him and also for us.”

“I think most people who know much about injuries and listening to what the doctors say… cruciate injuries can take around about nine months. You only need to look at Virgil van Dijk, and people of that ilk. And how long it takes to recover.”

“I don’t think there is a quick return. I think there is a period of recovery time that has to be taken. So I think it will be hard for Angelo to be back this season.”
