The Ballon d’Or winner suffered a severe ACL injury on the eve of Spain’s Euro 2022 campaign.

Barcelona and Spain star Alexia Putellas will remain out of action for approximately 10-12 months after undergoing an ACL surgery.

The winger missed the ongoing Euro 2022 tournament after suffering an injury last week. La Roja have found a brilliant start to the games in her absence, but they need to prepare for their star winger’s lengthy spell on the sidelines.

An official statement from Barcelona reads: “The FC Barcelona Medical Services are pleased to announce that Tuesday morning’s operation on Alexia Putellas at Hospital de Barcelona was a success.

“The women’s team captain and world player of the year has torn cruciate ligaments in her left knee. She will be out of action for between 10 and 12 months.”

Putellas has scored 27 goals in his 100 appearances for Spain. The 28-year-old is also a crucial member of Barcelona’s women’s team, who reached the Champions League final last season.

Putellas became UCL’s top scorer after scoring 11 goals in the tournament. She scored Barca’s only goal in their 3-1 defeat against Lyon in the final.

Putellas’ injury will most likely force the Catalans to add a new winger to their ranks ahead of the next season.
