Putellas’ possible absence will be a significant blow to Spain’s squad ahead of the competition. A few weeks before the games, La Roja saw another one of their key players, Jennifer Hermoso, miss the tournament with an injury.

Putellas won the Ballon d’Or after his incredible performances for Barcelona during the 2020-21 campaign. The Catalans won their first-ever Women’s Champions League title while claiming the La Liga title.

Putellas and co came close to repeating their success after their perfect La Liga campaign last season. However, a defeat against Lyon in the UCL final prevented them from claiming back-to-back European titles.

Putellas, who has 100 caps for Spain, will now await her test results ahead of the Women’s Euros.

The tournament kicks off when hosts England take on Austria on Wednesday. Spain will meet their first opponent, Finland, two days later.
