Trent Alexander-Arnold suggests Liverpool must continue to evolve and adapt in order to maintain their dominance in the upcoming campaign.
A long-awaited moment finally arrived at Anfield in July when, after 30 years, the Liverpool team were presented with the Premier League trophy.
Jurgen Klopp’s men raised the bar higher up en route to becoming champions of England, breaking old records, making new ones, and finishing 18 points clear of runners-up Manchester City.
They are now set to start their title defense as they prepare to host newly-promoted Leeds United in the 2020/21 season opener on Saturday.
The Reds’ quality cannot be doubted, but odds are stacked against them if recent history is anything to go by. Only on one occasion in the past decade, the league title has been defended successfully.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is wise enough to know that nothing can be taken for granted and that his side’s cannot rely on their previous form in the upcoming campaign.
“For us, it’s not about topping the points that we got or scoring more goals, it’s about if we can all develop as a team and keep winning,” Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports.
“We need to keep that mentality, that is the main thing that helped us get this far. We know that there’s now a big target on our backs being the champions and teams are going to be extra motivated when they play us, so we need to match that mentality and take it to the next step.
“Winning it back-to-back is harder than winning it once.”
