Can Liverpool make it back-to-back titles? Or will a surprise name snatch the crown instead? Find out here in the latest bookmaker favorites for the 2020/21 Premier League title.

The 2020/21 Premier League season beckons, with all 20 teams gearing up for action. The opening round begins this weekend in what promises to be another thriller, despite the continued absence of supporters.

All eyes will be at Anfield as reigning champions Liverpool host Championship winners Leeds United. The Reds will be keen for all three points to kick-start their title defense in the correct manner, having ended their 30-year wait for glory in June.

But while Jurgen Klopp’s men were unstoppable last season, nobody expects a repeat this time around. Especially with a resurgent Manchester City plotting to snatch the league crown back from their grasp.

Manchester City to reclaim the crown

After a dismal 2019/20 campaign, which saw them finish 18 points behind winners Liverpool, Pep Guardiola’s side are determined to make amends.

A mere 81 points last season would be an impressive haul for any other team in the English top-flight. But City are a different beast altogether, having recorded 198 points in 2017/18 and 2018/19 alone. Therefore, they’ve gone all out to ensure their lofty standards are reached for the new season.

Nathan Ake (€45.3m), Ferran Torres (€23m), Yan Couto (€6m), and Issa Kabore (€4.5m) have all arrived at the Etihad this summer for a combined €78.8m. While rumors persist over a potential scoop for Napoli star Kalidou Koulibaly.

This has led bookmakers, such as Bet365, on Oddschecker to tip the Citizens for league glory at 4 / 5. Considering the talent and depth at Guardiola’s disposal, this isn’t all surprising either.

Should City pull through and claim Premier League success again, it will be their fifth title in just 10 seasons.

Liverpool, meanwhile, sit second on the bookmakers’ shortlist priced at 9 / 4. They have won the title last season in record-breaking fashion, but chances of a repeat aren’t in their favor.

While summer big-spenders Chelsea complete the top-three with odds of 10 /1 on Bet365 after breaking the bank to sign Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, and Ben Chilwell for a combined €223.2m.

Could the Premier League trophy return to Old Trafford?

May 12th, 2013 was the last time the Premier League trophy was seen at Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson headed into retirement afterward. The Scot’s exit coincided with a downturn in fortunes for Manchester United.

The Red Devils turned to David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, and Jose Mourinho to revive their former glory. Each coach, however, failed in that aspect and were promptly shown the door in Stretford.

But welcoming back fan favorite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager has brought some progress.

The ‘Baby-Faced Assassin’ has experienced his fair share of highs and lows since replacing Mourinho in December 2018. Last season, in particular, was a challenging time. There were rumors his job was on the line amid a difficult start before a dramatic upturn in form from January onwards led to an impressive third-place finish.

United’s strong form in the second half of 2019/20 came following the big-money winter arrival of Bruno Fernandes from Sporting CP. The Portuguese made an immediate impact, helping the club go unbeaten in their last 14 games.

The record 20-time English champions have since beaten the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona to signing for the highly-rated Donny van de Beek in a €39m transfer from Ajax this summer.

Alex Telles, Dayot Upamecano, David Brooks, Jack Grealish, Ousmane Dembele, Federico Chiesa, and Jadon Sancho are also to be on Solskjaer’s radar.

Anyone of these signings would be a huge boost for United, meaning Bet 365’s odds of 16/1 may have some value if you’re in a daring mood.

Mikel Arteta’s resurgent Arsenal side (33/1) and Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham (50/1) may also be worth looking out for.
