Right after losing yet another Premier League match, Jurgen Klopp elaborated after making a surprising statement. They can’t close the gap.
For Jurgen Klopp, closing the gap with Manchester City is already impossible right now. Liverpool just painfully lost another Premier League match against a title contender and effectively renounced the trophy. It’s been a rough season for the Reds between injuries and bad results. At the end of last season, Klopp had high hopes and promised to attack rather than defending the title they just won.
But he never expected the many setbacks the squad encountered along the way. After this Saturday’s defeat against Leicester City, Klopp finally gave up on the Reds’ pursuit of the second Premier League title in a row. As things stand right now, Liverpool are 13 points behind Manchester City in the table. In fact, they might even lose their Top Four position if Chelsea and West Ham win their respective games on Sunday.
Klopp explains why Liverpool is done.
After the game, we could clearly see a distraught Jurgen Klopp who understands the gravity of this situation. The Evening Standard picked up his statements: “Yes. I don’t think we can close the gap. We have to win football games and big parts of the football were really good. We have to avoid mistakes and misunderstandings. Today we didn’t do that. The rest of the game was really good. First we have to perform again, results are massively related to the performance.
“We are not worrying about the title, we are not silly. With the majority of the game I agree it was a really good game. It’s not easy to dominate Leicester in the way we dominated. We scored a great goal but conceded a strange one and I think it’s offside and the 2-1 is a misunderstanding. That had too big an impact on the game. We had to show a different reaction and the third we gave away too easily.”
