Spain international Adama Traore is set to turn down international duty for Mali after being called by Luis Enrique’s side.

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore is set to refuse an offer to play internationally for Mali. He reportedly wants to represent Spain at a national level.

Traore was born in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, which is in the vicinity of Barcelona. His parents are from Mali.

The speedster has not played any game with either nation at a senior level. Although, Mali included Traore’s name in their roster for next month’s international friendlies.

Spain Yes, Mali No.

Mali plays against Ghana and Iran in the following week. Both games will take place in Turkey.

Nonetheless, Traore is opting not to play for Mali. He wants to commit to Spain at a senior level. Evidently, the winger represented the nation at the Under-21 level.

The Spaniard represented his country at a junior level many times. He started with Under-16 and moved up to Under-21 from 2012 to 2018. Traore appeared for the country a total of 18 times in six years.

The 24-year-old was selected for Spain in the team for Nations League fixtures last month. They played against Germany and Ukraine, winning both the games.

However, he could not play as he was tested positive for COVID-19. Although, a second test proved that he showed negative results.

Unfortunately, Traore missed the opportunity to represent the senior team in November 2019. This was because he suffered from an injury during the time.

When asked about the winger last March, Spain manager Luis Enrique said: “We have known him very well for many years,” he told Marca.

“When we were in Barcelona, he was in our plans. He has evolved a lot. He’s a very interesting player. We are delighted with his performances.”

Mali put quality efforts to persuade Traore to play for them. Though, the forward will most probably end up playing for Enrique’s side. Spain plays against Switzerland and Ukraine in the upcoming Nations League games.
