We celebrate one of Lionel Messi’s most important days, one in which he completely changed the landscape in the world of football.

It’s been 16 years since a young 16-year-old was about to make his dream come true, Lionel Messi was about to make his professional debut. That day, a Catalan Derby was taking place between FC Barcelona and Espanyol in the Spanish La Liga. Donning the number 30 jersey, a short and skinny kid got on the pitch after replacing Deco.

From that moment forward, the football world as we know it changed completely. None of us imagined what the next 16 years would be like, nobody would’ve been able to predict it. Even the Barcelona scouts who saw a young Messi playing when he was a kid couldn’t possibly imagine they were witnessing greatness.

However, Leo has one specific highlight out of all the achievements he’s done over the years. Something that he wouldn’t have done on his own, a long-lived moment that the rest of the world will cherish forever.

Leo’s biggest rival was his biggest motivation.

Even though he’s done plenty of incredible things on his own. That night during the Catalan Derby was only the start of another journey. We had the second of possibly the two greatest players to ever do it as professionals. It was only a matter of time before they faced each other on the football pitch.

Messi was completely unaware of the historic rivalry he was about to live for the next two decades against Cristiano Ronaldo. Fortunately, none of both players are tired of playing football just yet. We will get another edition of their already legendary story that can’t be told without mentioning the other player.

Today we celebrate Messi, but we know that we will also celebrate something Ronaldo will accomplish tomorrow. We are all very fortunate to live in the era of the two fiercest beasts in football history. Trust me, you will miss them both after they hang up their boots.
