Following Saturday’s final-day action, the Bundesliga has announced the best footballer of the 2022/23 campaign.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham has won the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season award.

The 19-year-old was a near-constant figure in Dortmund’s title-challenging squad. He started in 30 of the club’s 34 games, supplying eight goals and five assists.

“Every year or half year that I’ve played at the club, my responsibility in the team has increased,” Bellingham said after winning the award.

“I have to continue to be everywhere on the pitch and try my best to contribute going forwards and backwards and try and control games, try to dominate the midfield.”

The England international joined Dortmund from Birmingham City in July 2020 for a €25 million fee. He has made 132 appearances in all competitions, scoring 24 goals and dishing out a further 25 assists.

This season, Bellingham became the club’s youngest-ever captain after donning the skipper’s armband in two Bundesliga and Champions League games.

“My teammates, the coaches, and the staff have helped me to develop,” he added.

“I came to the club as a talented lad but I have added elements to my game that have taken it to the next level and I think that’s down to them, mainly.”

Unfortunately, Bellingham didn’t play in Dortmund’s 2-2 draw against Mainz on Saturday. The midfielder had a knee problem. The stalemate cost BVB a first Bundesliga title since. Instead, Bayern Munich pipped them on goal difference after a 2-1 final-day victory over FC Koln.
