The former Manchester United and England midfielder has weighed in on the debate between himself and Steven Gerrard.

Paul Scholes has suggested that debating on who was the better player between himself and Steven Gerrard has no merit, as they were ‘very different’.

Scholes and Gerrard were midfield legends in their own right. They starred for Manchester United and Liverpool respectively, producing many memorable moments. But if there was one thing most Premier League fans couldn’t settle on, it was who was the better player out of the two.

Now, while speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s Vibe with Five podcast, Scholes gave his two cents on the debate.

“I can’t answer that,” he said of the debate with his former England teammate.

“Gerrard’s a great player… I’m not saying myself. We’re different, we’re very different. He’s an athlete. I think he was more of a match-winner, but he was playing in a team where he probably had to be.

“I was more part of a team. He was more individual I think.”

“I wouldn’t be able to do what he did at Liverpool,” Scholes added.

“Whether he could’ve done what I did at United, I don’t know. I don’t see why not. But I couldn’t have done what he did at Liverpool, no.”

So, who was the better player? The debate rages on, but one thing is for sure: both Scholes and Gerrard were midfield maestros who left an indelible mark on the game of football.
