The newly-signed defender picked up a serious knee injury in his first appearance for the Gunners.
Arsenal have confirmed Jurrien Timber has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The Gunners signed Timber on a £38m deal earlier this summer, hoping to have found their new left-back.
The 22-year-old started for Mikel Arteta’s side in their season-opener against Nottingham Forest last weekend. But he limped off after spending 50 minutes on the pitch.
On Wednesday, the club revealed the test results on Timber’s knee injury: “We can confirm that Jurrien Timber has sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Jurrien will undergo surgery in the coming days.”
The club haven’t provided a timeframe for Timber’s recovery, expecting the player to be “out of action for a period of time”. As with most ACL injuries, Timber will most likely stay sidelined for at least seven to eight months. The former Ajax star can expect to return to the pitch sometime in 2024.
Timber’s long-term injury is a massive blow to Arsenal’s squad planning for the new season. The Gunners could insist on keeping Kieran Tierney, who is linked with Newcastle and Real Sociedad.
Following a victory over Forest in the Premier League’s opening matchday, Arsenal will take on Crystal Palace in their next game this Monday.
