The young striker returns to club football after spending a fantastic World Cup campaign with Netherlands.

PSV Eindhoven will demand “more than €40m” for Cody Gakpo in January, according to club director Marcel Brands.

Gakpo came close to joining Manchester United last summer. But a host of expensive signings forced the Red Devils to delay a move for the Dutchman.

However, Gakpo’s performances in the World Cup seem to have dramatically increased his price tag. Widespread reports in English media claim Erik ten Hag is still pushing to sign Gakpo.

But Brands says they are yet to receive a concrete offer from interested clubs.

“You have to be realistic,” he said. “When you talk about Cody’s price tag, how many European clubs are able to buy a player of his calibre? Maybe ten or twelve clubs?

“You just need a player in that position and then also be able and willing to spend the money in January. We just have to see if it all happens.”

He added: “It must be a record transfer for PSV anyway, so then you know which direction it is going. More than €40m in any case.

“We have to see if it will all happen. In the media it seems like all clubs are lining up, but the reality is that we are not yet aware of any interest.

“Cody is going on vacation now. If there was something going on, it might be known to Cody or his management. However, nothing is known to us.”
