The Algeria international scored his 50th goal for the club in a dominant victory at St. James Park.

Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez reckons two quick goals made the club’s win over Newcastle look ‘easy’.

The 30-year-old scored the third goal of the game on Sunday to help City claim a 4-0 win at St. James’ Park.

Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo put the Citizens into a two-goal lead before the half-hour mark, which Mahrez has suggested was key, and Raheem Sterling sealed all three points with a fourth goal late in the second half.

“Every game is a battle. It’s always good to score early in the game and that’s what we did. Overall, it was a good game and we deserved to win,” Mahrez told the club’s website.

“We had a very good second half. The first half wasn’t very good but we still scored two goals and stayed solid, but the second half we played so good and deserved to score even more goals to get the win.

“We never gave them an opportunity, but I think it was still a tough battle. They were very aggressive. It wasn’t an easy game, obviously when you score two quick goals you make it easy for yourself.”

The Algerian has now scored 50 goals for City in 165 appearances across all competitions, while also supplying 41 assists.

Pep Guardiola’s side are set to return to action next Sunday in another Premier League match against Mahrez’s former club Leicester.
