Brendan Rodgers and Steven Gerrard will meet again this weekend as Leicester City will face Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Brendan Rodgers believes that Steven Gerrard has made a brilliant start to his campaign with Aston Villa while talking about their relationship ahead of their meeting in the Premier League this weekend.
Leicester City will travel to Villa Park on Sunday as the former Liverpool manager will meet his old team player again on the field.
In fact, the pair had a head to head battle in the Scottish Premiership when they were managing Celtic and Rangers respectively.
The return of Gerrard has seen Villa win their first two games under him in the Premier League and Rodgers is not at all surprised by the results.
While speaking about their relationship, the Foxes boss said: “When we were there (at Liverpool) together, Steven was brilliant for me as a captain. He was a very inspirational captain and from the very first day I was there, he was brilliant. He was very supportive.”
“He had the respect of all the players and everyone at the club for what he had done. He never rested on that. He was an incredible professional and very focused on his game and making improvements. In the few years we had together, we adjusted his game to what he’d been for most of his career.”
“Even though he was one of the icons of the league, he was very keen to embrace that change. In the first couple of seasons, I was there, he was fantastic. For a really young manager going into Liverpool, he was outstanding. It doesn’t surprise me that he’s made this step going into management.”
“We don’t have so much contact because it’s busy and you get on with your own life as such – but I can see that similar mindset taking it into his coaching and management career. It’s started off really well and it will be good to see him at the weekend.”
“Most of the players I’ve worked with there’s always a friendship there. I am always there to support if needed. When you manage Celtic and Rangers, it’s very difficult to have that contact.”
“I’ve spoken to other managers about that. From time to time I’ll drop Steven a text but of course, you are pretty much focused on your own work like he will be his.”
