Wenger names six teams he could’ve joined during Arsenal spell

The former legendary Gunners manager has revealed his regret at not leaving the club before 2018 for the first time.

Arsene Wenger claims he could’ve coached Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Real Madrid, as well as the English and French national teams, during his career.

In a new documentary, ‘Arsene Wenger: Invincible’, Wenger opened up about his time at the Emirates Stadium, namely when it first opened in 2006. He described how he suffered in that period, but maintains that keeping Arsenal in the Champions League until 2017 was perhaps his greatest career achievement.

Three years on from his departure in 2018, however, the Frenchman revealed how the departure of vice-chairman David Dein in 2007 was a ‘decisive’ moment that almost saw him leave as well.

“I identified myself completely with the club – that was the mistake I made,” Wenger said.

“My fatal flaw is I love too much where I am . . . where I was. I regret it. I should have gone somewhere else.”

After leading Arsenal to unbeaten Premier League success in 2003/04, Wenger never won the league title again. He did, however, add another three FA Cups to his haul. Even when the Gunners had to sell their best players to pay off their stadium debt, they still qualified for the Champions League each season until 2017.

“Sometimes I wonder – was something broken after that Invincible season? 2007 was a decisive point,” continued the 72-year-old.

“It was the first time I could feel there were tensions inside the board. I was torn between being loyal to the club and being loyal to David [Dein]. Today wonder if I did the right thing because life was never exactly the same after. I thought, ‘I have now to go to the end of this project’.

Wenger added: “I could have gone to the French national team. The English national team twice or three times even. I could have gone twice to Real Madrid. I could have gone to Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain, even Man United.”
